The Hive Five: Game Twenty-Four

Amazing win! The Hornets continued to show they could play with the West’s best, with a solid, solid effort against Phoenix. How amazing has Chris Paul been in December? 21 and 11 again tonight, while hitting a HUGE trifecta down the stretch. Hilton Armstrong had a monstrous dunk off the bench, Chandler pulled down 18, and West was solid as usual (15 and 11). Chris Paul has Steve Nash’s number, head-to-head.

1. Shooting (X) The best part of this game? Phoenix outshot New Orleans by more than five percent, and we still won. Shawn Marion’s gotta be kicking himself for missing that last shot, but that was really a very tough runner. Steve Nash got burned by CP3, going a mere 4-12 with just 12 points.

2. Turnovers () Going into the game, you obviously expected excellent ball control, with CP3 and Nash manning the point. That’s exactly what happened; Paul had one TO while Nash had just two. As I noted yesterday though, David West has been in a serious turnover slump (fueled by offensive fouls all over the place), and it continued today. The big man finished with 5 turns.

3. Offensive Rebounding () Offensive rebounding won the game. How many times have I said that this year? Tyson Chandler and David West were beasts on the glass, offensively and defensively. Whatever Byron Scott’s been preaching to these guys, they’ve been listening.

4. Free Throws (X) Not a lot of contact in this game at all, forget the refs. Well other than the David West offensive fouls.

5. Pace (93) Forcing Phoenix to play at a 93 pace is just absolutely amazing; in fact, it’s the slowest they’ve been forced to play this year. Chalk that up to Chris Paul who hounded Nash defensively, and played settled basketball on the other end. As noted in the preview, the Suns are winless when held under 100. They’re now 0-7 under that condition.
